Miller Architects & Builders is 2011 Chamber Mark
St. Cloud, Minn. – Fifth-generation business owner, Dan Miller, is the 2011 Business Central Mark of Excellence-Family Owned Business Award recipient. The award is presented annually by the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce.

Miller, owner of Miller Architects and Builders, traces his roots in the construction industry back to the 1800s when his great-great grandfather arrived in the U.S. from Germany and put his cabinet and carpentry skills to work.

With the ups and downs of the economy and its impact on commercial construction, Miller has always been one to seek out long-term niches. In the 1960s and 1970s the company was heavily involved in the agriculture industry. At one point they had 14 crews working to shore up barn foundations on farms throughout the Midwest.

In the 1980s the company moved into commercial construction and was one of the pioneers of what has come to be known as the design-build system. Under design-build the contractor becomes a one-stop shop for the customer, helping with everything from project development, financing packages, site selection, architectural design, to construction management and supervision. Miller was one of the first construction companies in the state to bring an architect on staff full-time.

Dan grew up in the family business, spending his summers straightening barns. Shortly after graduating from college he started working with his father, developing and leasing the company’s properties. In 1990 Dan and his brother, Tim, purchased the construction portion of the business from their father.

Originally doing business within about an hour of St. Cloud, the company now has customers throughout the upper Midwest. That growth has followed the development of new niches – funeral homes, senior housing and assisted living, churches, and most recently, casinos. In 2000 Dan bought out Tim and in 2006 he brought in two long-term employees as partners.

Though the recession set them back, Miller Architects and Builders experienced a record year for profitability in 2010. “That’s partly because job cycles can be two to three years out,” Dan Miller said. “The pipeline of work was starting to look a little empty for awhile, but we’re filling up again so 2011 is looking pretty good, too.” Apparently that’s just one of the challenges that makes business interesting for Dan. “You’re never bored,” he said. “It’s these challenges that keep you interested.”

Dan Miller will be honored at the Chamber’s Business Awards Luncheon on May 3, 2011, at noon at the Holiday Inn and Suites. The cost is $19 for Chamber members; $29 for the general public; reservations can be made by calling 320-251-2940, ext. 126. The luncheon will also recognize Brownie Williams, Williams Integracare Clinic, the 2011 St. Cloud Area Small Business Owner of the Year, and John Schlecht, Crafts Direct, the 2011 St. Cloud Area Entrepreneurial Success Award Recipient.

Star of the North Meeting
Saint Paul River Centre, St. Paul, MN

We're heading to the Star of the North Meeting for three days of learning, networking and fun. Along with exhibiting our products and services, we look forward to connecting with you.

We selected Miller Architects & Builders and the design/build method to design and build our new facility. The overall project was a great success, but a lot was due to the friendliness of your staff, your willingness to listen to our concerns, the ability of the architects to design a cost-effective building that met all of our needs, your attention to detail, overall workmanship and the completion of a project that was on-time and on-budget.
